Game Review: Resident Evil 6

Resident Evil 6 is the sixth numbered game in the Resident Evil franchise. The game takes place in June of 2013 and puts the player in the shoes of Leon Kennedy (of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4), Chris Redfield (of Resident Evil and Resident Evil 5), Sherry Berkin (of Resident Evil 2) and Ada Wong (seen through out Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4).

Story
From what I experienced, the story is great, and really keeps me on my feet throughout everything that happened. In Leon’s campaign, I felt like I didn’t have all the information, but neither did he. If I had more time to play the game, I am sure everything will start to make sense. I would have to give it an 80% because, while I did not know everything it still kept me interested, but I would have liked more information during Leon’s campaign – there were references to all the other campaigns that I did not follow because I had not played them yet.

Gameplay
Gameplay was solid and easy to get used to. They seemed to have cut back on the quick time events from the fifth game, which is good. Once everything was figured out, it was fairly easy to dispatch zombies and other Bio Organic Weapons. The bosses had interesting mechanics that reminded me of Dead Space (shoot the glowing body parts) and they eventually got outrageous in their form. The bosses also spawned zombies, which is good, because the bosses were ammo sinks and the zombies dropped ammo. I would have to give gameplay 90% because the quick time events could have been easier to figure out.

Controls
Controls were easy to learn, but the UI took some getting used to, also the cover system was a bit tedious. I barely used in in Leon’s campaign, and was getting slightly annoyed with it in Chris’s. In my opinion, the cover system is good for a start, but this day in age, they could have borrowed from the likes of Gears of War or Uncharted and possibly have done it better. I give controls 90% for those reasons.

Graphics and Sound
The game was beautiful! I was thinking going in that they must have run out of ideas to make zombies terrifying, but I was, thankfully, wrong. The bosses were freaky and just would not die. The sounds were also great – I felt like I was actually in a city taken over by anarchy. There was fires in the street and everything was collapsing. It was horrifically beautiful, and for that reason I give graphics and sound 100% because it was the strongest of all the categories.

Overall
This is a good game, and I’m not just saying that because I am a fan of the franchise. The UI confusion, the controls, and the gameplay, while they could be better, could have been a lot worse, and because the series is about bio organic weapons and not necessarily survival horror, I say this is a worthy member of the series. But you have to go into it not thinking about survival horror – remember, the franchise in Japan is called Biohazard, and with that in mind, as long as the B.O.W.s are in it, it is about biohazards. As a survival horror game, this game gets a final score of about 60%-65% because of the lack of survival, despite the fact that I ran out of ammo more times that I care to admit, I was never truly worried because I knew there would be crates or zombies that dropped ammo around there somewhere, but as a third-person shooter/action game with some survival horror elements, the game gets a solid 90%. Fans of the series not turned off by Resident Evil 5 should play this game, fans of third-person action games should play this game, people looking for a darker version of Uncharted should play this game, and I do not regret the money I spent to play it.
